Combatting Dataangst
Countless cases of gross data privacy negligence, the commodification of personal data for profit, and concerns of algorithms/AI replacing our autonomy has led to widespread dataangst. While acknowledging concerns and fighting misuse, we need to re-balance our one-sided perception of data collection, analysis, and usage.
(Re-)Balance the Data Debate
Data is data. Private and governmental data missteps are framing policy debates and public perception. Data's crucial role for bettering social ills, helping to fight environmental degredation, and improving our overall quality of life is largely ignored or belittled. Yet, discussing data impartially and holistically is paramount to successfully navigate the digital age.
Zooming in: the Value of Data for Society
Data's role must be discussed beyond technical circles, lobbyists, and government. Civil society organisations must be given a seat at the table to explore, develop, and highlight how data can be used as a force of good and how it needs to be regulated.
Bringing Stakeholders Together Globally
Dataangst is international in nature. To change perceptions and create positive momentum, global cooperation is imperative in light of geopolitical tensions and misguided digital sovereignty restrictions. Expert dialogues including civil society, capacity development programmes, and logistical support are a first step to increase the social value of data.
